Half Moon Equestrian Centre: Horseback Ride on the Beach and Swim with Your Horse!

Whether you are an experienced rider or an absolute beginner, one of the highlights of your visit is sure to be the Half Moon Equestrian Centre. The Centre is privately run by Trina De Lisser, a level 2 FEI instructor. This is a world-class facility with world-class horses and staff, and there’s something for every skill level. You can enjoy private lessons in beginning riding, basic dressage, polo, or jumping, and even high-level riders will leave having learned something new from Trina.

For the experienced rider, the Turf and Surf experience offers an exciting ride culminating with a refreshing bareback swim in the Caribbean. The horses are trained to swim in deep water, as far as 30 to 40 feet offshore! Some very adventurous riders will even stand up on their horses and jump off into the water. This program is usually done in the morning when the water is calmer, and is led by highly professional guides who lead no more than two guests at a time, but it is still not for the faint of heart or the inexperienced equestrian. The bareback swim has been called life-changing by some riders. As one recent TripAdvisor reviewer wrote:

We tried this and loved it – you actually swim with the horses and it was nothing short of amazing. Our guides were great and made sure we had an unforgettable experience. Grateful for the go-pro we had which captured very cool underwater footage of the swim. A must-do experience for couples/newlyweds in my opinion.

Half Moon Resort Jamaica beachFor those with less experience on a horse, the Sand Stroll is a relaxing, scenic ride through the property and along the shore of Sunrise Beach. Half Moon Resort also offers a unique program called Positive Empowerment, an un-mounted exercise where participants use body language to communicate with the horse. It’s an opportunity to cultivate mindfulness and have an experience of connection both with the horse and oneself.

Between riding classes, the Turf and Surf, and the more gentle experiences, the Half Moon Equestrian Centre offers a holistic equestrian program with something for everyone to enjoy.

Besides the numerous equestrian activities at Half Moon, you can relax by one of the 54 swimming pools, take a stroll along the sweeping sugar-sand beach, or play 18 holes at the on-site golf course. There are also 13 tennis courts, a wild dolphin lagoon, a full suite of water sports, and a fitness center featuring a wide variety of classes to stay active on your vacation.
